POETICS is a ground-breaking One Health initiative that reimagines how we detect and respond to biological threats in fragile settings.
By fusing insights from health, environmental science, security, and local knowledge, POETICS builds a flexible, co-produced early warning system designed to operate in the world’s most complex environments. It bridges siloed disciplines and sectors to deliver real-time, actionable intelligence that reflects the true drivers of epidemics—from conflict and climate shocks to livestock trade and governance gaps. POETICS offers a new, globally relevant model for epidemic preparedness rooted in equity, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
POETICS pioneers a new approach to epidemic threat intelligence in fragile settings by integrating health, environmental, and security data. Through co-produced, interdisciplinary methods, the project develops flexible early-warning systems that better reflect the complex drivers of disease emergence.
POETICS is creating a next-generation One Health early warning system (EWS) tailored for fragile and high-uncertainty environments where existing surveillance models fall short. Operating at the intersection of health, environmental change, and security, POETICS tackles biological threats not as isolated events, but as complex, cascading phenomena shaped by conflict, climate, governance, and social dynamics.
The POETICS system integrates human, animal, and environmental health data with political and security intelligence using a novel fusion methodology developed with Iraqi partners. Unlike traditional approaches, POETICS is pathogen-agnostic, co-produced with local stakeholders, and designed to function amid data gaps, institutional fragmentation, and uncertainty.
The EWS is being built through iterative testing on real-world threats, beginning with Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), and expanding to include cholera and avian influenza. It synthesises diverse data streams including surveillance reports, climate anomalies, community observations, and social media into a modular, interoperable platform deployable in low-resource settings.
More than a technical tool, the POETICS EWS embeds community engagement, policy co-design, and international partnerships to ensure uptake, sustainability, and global relevance. By drawing on security studies, decision science, and transdisciplinary expertise, POETICS is building a resilient, inclusive model for epidemic detection that redefines how One Health intelligence is generated and used where it’s needed most.
